History of Steel

From temporary Quonsets to towering skyscrapers that cast shadows over the cityscape, steel has been an invaluable building block for the modern world.  Yet the history of steel extends much farther back into mankind’s history than most people realize.  Although you wouldn’t exactly have seen a construction crew assembling the skeleton of a steel building back in the days of the ancient world, steel was still an important material to early human civilization.

Some of the oldest steel that has been found dates back as far as 1400 BC, located in the East African region.  It is believed that this steel was formed by manipulating the bloom in the metal so that it contained carbon.  Rather than being used for construction purposes, the steel from this period was often formed into the shape of weapons.  These ancient steel weapons were used in many different areas in the world.  The Roman military was known to wield Nordic steel.  The Iberian Peninsula produced steel weapons such as the Falcata back in the 4th century BC.  Around the same period, the Chinese of the Warring States were known for using quench-hardened steel.  Much as the metal building is an concept that can be found around the globe in various forms today, steel weaponry existed in a variety of different cultures in antiquity, showing just how important this metal alloy has been to the development of human civilization as we know it.

Durability of Vinyl

Many home owners who want a durable fence feel that vinyl best meets their needs. Vinyl fencing tends to be maintenance-free, plus it is attractive and long-lasting. Wood fencing and metal fencing also offer durable fences, but some home owners go with vinyl as the option that tends to require the least amount of upkeep.
Vinyl is a popular choice for home owners in regions with precipitation, heavy rainfall, and coastal areas where sand and salt contribute to the wear and tear of building materials. People in these regions often want to go with the most weather-resistant material possible. In Northwestern states like Washington, vinyl is especially popular due to its durability even in regular humidity and rain. Using vinyl fencing, Vancouver residents and others throughout the state of Washington vary the look and feel of their homes with gorgeous vinyl picket fences, lattice borders, and larger enclosures that make a yard or patio completely private.
Vinyl fencing is so durable that some manufacturers provide it with a lifetime warranty. For Oregon residents interested in vinyl fencing, Salem, Hillsboro, Bend, and Portland are home to locations of Rick’s Custom Fencing and Decking stores—these shops offer vinyl fencing with a lifetime warranty. In addition, the staff members are experienced in fence building, so they can help owners in the design, estimating, or installation of a new fence, whether wood, vinyl, or another material.

Keeping an Old Counseling Job Fresh

In “Overcoming Job Burnout: How to Renew Enthusiasm for Work” by Dr. Beverly Potter,” job burnout is defined as “a malaise of the spirit in which motivation, that mysterious force that gets us moving is damaged or even destroyed.” Just like relationship enthusiasm, job enthusiasm waxes and wanes over time, and it takes work to stay motivated. When we can’t, we usually find a new job.

Although finding a new job is the default route for most suffers of job burnout, it’s not the only option. Training for counselors in the form of continuing education courses can help keep a job feeling fresh and challenging. When you’re learning new information and skills, you are much less likely to feel stagnant or uninterested in your work. Sign up for a McKissock class and discover how to revitalize your counseling work.

Informed on Roofing

When home owners need to repair, replace, or build a roof, it is essential to go with a reliable commercial roofing contractor. Reliable contractors have time-tested results, exercise safe and reliable practices, have expertise in roof flashing details, and demonstrate thorough knowledge of roofing material, including various types of shingles, grades, and colors, plus materials used for specific projects such as low slope roofing or flat roofing. In addition, they should be aware of the needs of roofing in your own local. For example, a local roofing contractor better understands what a building in that area needs for maximum durability considering the seasonal climate. They would also be able to answer specific questions, such as why Presidential Colorado Springs shingles may be preferable for buildings in your area than other name brands.

In the process, plan to contact several roofers and to follow through with additional steps to ensure high-quality service. Owners should contact several roofing contractors to discuss the project, not just one. Listen to the advice of each, as well as expected costs and timeframes. After deciding on a competent roofer, all of the project details should be recorded in a legal contract and signed by both parties. At that point, the home owner must step back and let the roofer do the job that has been agreed upon. Avoid the costly mistake of changing courses after the project has begun! This is much easier when the owner has taken the necessary time to research the project, including costs and alternatives, and decided on the details and budget that are most suitable.

Lingerie Trends 2009

If love were indeed blind, fine lingerie wouldn’t be nearly so popular. Like other types of fashion, lingerie—whether bridal lingerie or just everyday lingerie—suggests something special about the person whom it adorns. And like other attire, lingerie is subject to changes in fashion consciousness. What steamed up the lingerie world last season may have fizzled and cooled this season. With an eye for the vogue, we present the top five lingerie trends for 2009:

  • Bright colors. Black lingerie is timeless, but statement lingerie in splashy blues and pinks is expected to make a big impression this year. The hues range from deep peacock blues to pastel pinks in classic styles that let the color do the talking.
  • Animal prints. A perennial favorite, animal prints ranging from leopard to zebra have been showing up both in lingerie and on sexy swim suits. These bold prints require a confident wearer but pay tremendous dividends when they catch an admirer’s eye.
  • Florals. Borrowed from the runway, this trend is renowned for its ability to make the wearer feel both delicate and sensual at the same time. Florals are often paired with other of-the-moment details such as ruffles and bows.
  • Convertible bras. What good is a bra that can be worn only one way? Whether or not the recession has made lingerie designers savvier about combining form and function, one thing’s clear: a bra that can accommodate all of your most striking outfits is a valuable bra indeed.
  • Corsetry. Need we say more? A corset is the paramount of mystery. It portends flirtation, seduction, and a dramatic revelation. Whether you select a trendy metallic style or one that calls to mind fine European lingerie, your vamp quotient is guaranteed to shoot through the roof.

Without the proper health insurance, any one of these can quickly turn a pleasant trip sour. Greeting Card Association

Sending birthday cards and other paper greetings through the mail for special occasions has become a treasured tradition over the years. Walking down the aisles of a store to peruse the selection of cards or displaying holiday greeting on the mantle are staples of the holiday season. But did you know that card makers and other associated manufacturers have their own trade organization?

Manufacturers of greeting cards, stationary, and wrapping paper in the United States have their interests represented by the trade organization known as The Greeting Card Association. The organization dates all the way back to 1941 and actually has its origins in a WWII War Department order to reduce the usage of paper by 25%. George Burkhardt, of the company Burkhardt-Warner, lead this small collection of card owners during this period. After the war ended, the Association shifted priorities to promoting the use of thank you cards and other greeting cards by the general public, as well as relevant postal affairs.

The headquarters of the Association are in Washington D.C. While the majority of members are U.S. companies that manufacture funny birthday cards and more, companies from abroad are permitted entry as well. The Association even has its own awards that it sponsors annually, held each May in the city of New York. The LOUIE Awards exist to celebrate the best designs in the greeting card industry.

No More Free Online Radio

One of the biggest names in free Internet radio, Last.fm, won’t be free for much longer––unless you’re lucky enough to live in the United States, the United Kingdom, or Germany, that is.  While Last.fm’s service will continue as is for these nations’ residents, Last.fm plans to change to a subscription-based service elsewhere.  The rate is expected to be about $3 US per month.

The announcement was made on Last.fm’s official blog by founder Richard Jones.  It was stated that the site plans to offer a free trial lasting 30 tracks before requiring users to pay the subscription fee.  There was a backlash from quite a few users who said they planned to stop using the service or who questioned why the online radio service would remain free for a certain subset of users; many felt it wasn’t fair for three countries to be subsidized by other users.  Manager Owen Parry responded to some of the concerns, stating that advertising would cover most of the costs for the subscription-free countries.

Last.fm is based out of London and currently boasts around 30 million users.  Visitors to the website use the service to stream online music that has been catered to their tastes.  They can also check out band biographies and music recommendations.  Last.fm boasts a collection of more than 7 million tracks and works with over a quarter million different artists and labels.

Toronto Smiles

Like most cities, Toronto has seen a huge expansion in cosmetic dentistry. For dentists, Toronto is a busy city to work in! While there are numerous dentists in the city who provide excellent services, patients should carefully check the credentials of professionals before having any type of work done, particularly if they are looking into cosmetic procedures.

One office that provides time-tested quality services is Toronto Smile Makeovers. At this office, patients receive traditional and cosmetic dental care. The doctors there, Dr. Andrew Charkiw and Dr. Armagon Afsar, are well known for their expertise and for describing cosmetic dental procedures on the makeover television show Style by Jury. This office receives visits from high-profile clients, in addition to patients who make appointments on the recommendation of neighbors and friends around the city.

Whether patients want laser teeth whitening, porcelain veneersa>, or need to fix or replace a damaged tooth, Toronto has a number of offices to choose from. As with any other medical provider, no matter what office you choose, be sure to check references, compare prices, and have an idea of what you would like to have done now, as well as what procedures can wait until later. Technology, equipment, and new procedures are constantly available—Toronto is no exception, and the residents’ smiles show it!
