Foods that burn fat

Sounds too good to be true? These foods do not literally “burn” the fat, to burn fat you need to burn more calories than you consume. These foods will make it easier for you to consume fewer calories.

Whole grains

Substitute refined foods with wholegrain. They are low in fat and the high fiber content makes you feel full for longer periods thereby reducing the need to eat while being a good source of energy.

Lean protein

The amino acids in protein develops lean muscle mass which helps to burn more calories. Have a diet rich in low fat dairy and lean meats and legumes.

Fruits and vegetables

These are packed with vitamins and minerals and a rich source of fiber and have only very few calories. Fiber will control your appetite. Choose varieties in season and consume them whole rather than have juice for better results.

Green tea

A component in green tea increases the body’s metabolism which will burn fat. Make sure to have two cups of green tea daily.

You need to keep in mind that though these foods can keep the calorie consumption low, you need to combine an exercise routine to be able to lose weight in a healthy manner.

How you can exercise when at work

Most of us spend the majority of our time at work, which is also a common excuse we give ourselves as why we do not have enough time to exercise. But the reality is that if we do not get regular exercise we will end up being yet another statistic for the obese and unhealthy. So how can we incorporate exercise to our work schedule?

Take the stairs. Avoid using the lift as much as possible. Climbing stairs for twenty minutes can burn up to 150 calories. It is a good aerobic workout which can improve your heart health apart from the weight loss benefits.

Do free weight exercises when at the desk, do bicep, tricep and shoulder exercises for 10 minutes every other day to strengthen your muscles.

If you sit at the desk for long hours on the phone, use a headset so that you can walk while making the call instead of being sedentary. Take every opportunity you have to walk. Wear a pedometer and try to walk 10,000 steps a day which is considered the ideal to keep fit.

Contract your abdominal muscles, hold for a few seconds and release, do a few repetitions every hour.

The older you get, the happier you become

According to the Centers for Disease Control, as quoted by Get Your Body Healthy Website, “New research … suggests that the older you get, the happier you become.”

This finding is, of course, absolutely contrary to all of the brainwashing we have all received about old age being times of gloom and doom, and it is an invigorating departure from that tired old message.

The results are based on a study conducted by the University of Georgia, which compared two sets of interviews with the same subjects, the first when they were ages 59 to 80, the second 14 years later. Here’s how Get Your Body Healthy Website summarizes the findings: “In the earlier set of interviews, the largest percentage [of study participants] chose their 50s as the most satisfying period of their lives.

An additional 18 percent picked their 60s and 70s. The childhood and teen years emerged as the unhappiest times; the 30s produced nearly equal feedback as being the best and worst years. When the same people were surveyed 14 years later, many of the responses remained the same. But 8 percent now said their 80s were their best years.”

Obesity: A Great Health Risk

Guest Post by Robert Sarian from Working Health Remedies

A recently released nationwide survey by Epocrates, the leading provider of handheld and Web-based clinical reference tools for healthcare professionals, says that “physicians consider obesity to be the single greatest public-health crisis today, taking a back seat to cigarette smoking and AIDS” (from the ArcaMax Health & Fitness Website: www.arcamax.com, then click on “Lifestyles” and, under that, “Health and Fitness” on leftmost column). “Even taking into account other serious public-health issues, doctors still identified obesity as the biggest problem,” says Dr. Liviu Klein, a cardiologist and heart-transplant specialist at Chicago’s Northwestern University Hospital. “This survey shows just how pervasive obesity is across the nation”. Obesity in the U.S. has risen drastically over the past 30 years, and shows little sign of abating any time soon.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 66 percent of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese. Although many overweight/obese patients (and some scientists) often look to genetics as the causative factor for obesity, “… many physicians feel that lifestyle factors are the major determinants. Among the physicians polled, only 13 percent identified genetics as the most important cause of obesity. The majority believed that lack of exercise and super-sized food portions [the average portion size in U.S. homes and restaurants has increased by roughly a third over the past three decades] are the greatest contributors to this problem.”

McCadmium Anyone?

Recently McDonald’s recalled 12 million promotional glasses it had sold to customers. The “Shrek” drinking glasses were found to be cadmium tainted and therefore unsafe for human use. However, the interesting thing to not here is that the entire process was voluntary.

The glasses were actually within federal guidelines for cadmium. The initial testing by a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) approved lab gave the company the go ahead to use the glasses. However, McDonald’s later decided to recall these glasses because the CPSC was revising its standards. Under the new standards, the glasses would have been illegal, so in order to avoid any future embarrassment and, obviously, harm to its customers the company decided to take some pre-emptive action.

The company is giving a full refund to its customers and has put up information on its website as to how customers can go about getting it. It has also stated that other promotional items and toys given through Happy Meals are not subject to the callback.

Cadmium is a toxic metal that is also a known carcinogen. It can cause severe kidney problems as well as bone softening. In very young children, the substance can lead to a hindrance of brain development. The danger from the glasses would be from hand to mouth contact. As in, children touching the outside of the glass and then putting the unwashed hand in their mouth.

The recall has got many worried about other products that they have used or have in their collections. They are worried about what they have or could have been exposed to without their knowledge. The new standards have not been made official, but under them many promotional products could face a massive recall.

Fitness Shoes for Women – Stunning Tips to Select the Best Shoe

When buying a fitness shoe, it is important you take the time to choose one that works best for you. Remember, that it must be a shoe that reduces the stress usually put on the feet by a pair of shoes. The market is awash with fitness shoes, and the choices are many. This will only make it even more difficult to choose a pair for you.

Here are some fabulous tips you should take into account when scouting for a pair of fitness shoes:

The arch of your heel – this is one of the most important factors that you should take into consideration before buying a fitness shoe. The arch of your foot can be determined by a simple impression on a paper. First wet your foot and stamp it on a dry sheet of paper. If your feet are flat, then the full impression will appear on the paper. Ask the shop assistant, they will show you shoes that are made for different kinds of feet, be they flat feet or not.

The right shoes for arched feet – the sole of the shoe is especially important for those who have a high arch in their feet. The inner sole should provide comfortable cushioning, especially since you will be partaking in frequent workouts. Ensure that the shoe you select reduces the impact of the workout on your feet. Ensure that there is good air circulation within the shoe. This will keep your feet from getting heated up, and will also ensure that the shoe does not get damp inside.

Addiction Treatment at its best!

A very general definition of drug addiction is basically the point after which the patient has lost control to cease the use of the drug and completely depends on it as a factor that determines his satisfaction and survival.

And there’s no doubt that there also comes a point when the individual and his or her family can take it no more, and instead begin to look for a drug rehab center where the addict can let go of his insatiable desire for the drug.

There are several drug rehab centers that addicts and families can find in serene and secluded settings. However, the benefit of admitting the addict at a drug rehab center does not stop with serenity and its location but with the method of addiction treatment and its kind staff that have substantial experience in taking care of addicts as well.

Since no two addicts are the same, no drug rehab program can be the same either, so the center caters to each individual personally combining group and individual therapy, the support of the individual’s family as well as outdoor programs and finally, also ensuring that the individual is completely rehabilitated from his addiction in the aftercare phase.

So, if you are concerned about a family member, you can find several rehab centers that offer personalized treatment and make an appointment as soon as possible.

Picking the Best Charcoal Grills

Picking a charcoal grill can seem like tough work but it actually it is not as hard as it seems. It really boils down to knowing what your budget is and to what extent you are going to use it which is much like any other product you would like to buy.

Now since barbeques (or cookouts) are a tradition in the United States not only in its traditional form complete with sauces unique to a particular region, but also in the form of restaurants and so on and so forth, several types of grills are manufactured to accommodate the needs of different consumers. Of the many types available, charcoal grills are a popular choice among many customers even though there are controversies that question the apparent advantages of using one of these machines.

However, keeping all these factors in mind, here are a few steps that could help you in picking a charcoal grill that is just right for you and your family.

The first (and most important) tip is that if it has less moving parts, there are fewer chances of something going wrong. Most of these types of grills are simple ones, which are easy to maintain and use, while also making it easier to store away when not being used. Another factor that is important is its sturdiness which can be ascertained just by looking at it while most of the best grills are small grill grids, so that might be a good factor to look for.

Finally, if the grill has ‘equal heat distribution’ and a temperature setting adjustment switch as well as accessories (like cleaning pans and cooking utensils), then you can be sure that you have a got a good deal.

How to avoid getting seasick

Seasickness is caused due to the simple motion of ships. Also known as mal de mer in French, it normally occurs to travelers in a ship causing dizziness, vomiting and nausea. This condition is also known as motion sickness. In normal conditions, the inner ear (which is responsible for balance) works with the eyes to tell your brain that you are standing on your two feet. However, when on a ship, there is a conflict between the two, where the inner ear tells the brain that your body is moving whereas the eyes tell the brain differently. This is why seasickness occurs.

Even though new technologies in shipbuilding that deploy stabilizers to reduce the motion effect of the craft, some people still get affected by seasickness. So it is advisable that a mega-liner ship is the best option for first time cruisers to avoid falling seasick.

Here are some tips to avoid seasickness:

1. Drink less liquid and eat less spicy food. It is better to eat solid food rather than to have a slushy stomach with exotic drinks if you are prone to seasickness.
2. Rather than resting in closed spaces (like your room) spend some time in the open areas of the ship, which can slow down seasickness symptoms.
3. Opt for preventative medication. Consulting your doctor for medicine such as Scopolamine, Dramamine, and Bonine can help prevent seasickness.
4. An acupressure wristband commonly known as Sea band, which applies constant pressure to the P6 (Nei-Kuan) acupressure point between the two central tendons on the wrist, can help prevent seasickness.
5. Finally, divert your thoughts, get some fresh air, and avoid reading, as it is important to prevent the conflict between your eyes and the inner ear, which leads to seasickness on a moving ship.
