Health Benefits of Rowing

Getting in shape is not without many choices. From dance classes to fitness routines to boot camp, there seems to be a solution for almost everyone. Likewise, rowing is a superb way of getting in shape, especially if you are a lover of the great outdoors. Even if you are not, an indoor rowing machine can do the trick. Here is why rowing is such a healthy sport:

- The entire body benefits from rowing, as the seat moves back and forth, the rower gets a workout with both legs and arms.
- The rowing gives you a full body workout as well as an incredible cardio exercise.
- It is great exercise for the upper body but is about 85 percent legs.
- Experts say the constant motion gets the heart rate up and is thus maintained throughout the entire workout, which lasts for upto 40 minutes or so.
- Rowing machines are built to feel and sometimes sound like you are on the water. This is so much better than the constant humming of a treadmill motor.
- A thirty minute rowing session burns almost 300 calories.
- The rhythmic motion of rowing can be meditative. This gives your mind a chance to relax and reduce stress.
- If you are just after an accident, rowing is an excellent low-impact exercise for the joints. Tension adjustments are easy to make, and you can use more back and less arm to row if necessary.
- If you choose to row outdoors, the fresh air will help as well as the Vitamin D from the sun.

Two Great Natural Acne Remedies That Can Help Your Skin

Acne outbreaks can be difficult to deal with and finding the right remedy can be costly. Some treatments don’t really work while others are too harsh for your skin and make the situation even worse. Trying out natural remedies is an option you might want to consider.

Some of the best natural remedies include drinking a lot of water. This helps to flush toxins out of your system. Get plenty of exercise and make sure you are on a healthy diet. In most cases, these tips will curtail your acne outbreaks to a great deal, and most importantly don’t cost you any extra money. Acne outbreaks are caused by puberty or other chemical imbalances, and thus consulting a doctor for severe outbreaks is important.

These natural acne remedies might just work for you:

- Lemon Juice – the citric acid in lemon juice kills the bacteria and doesn’t damage your skin. Astringents contain alcohol which does. They contain alcohol because it means a longer shelf life for the product.
- Oatmeal – another successful natural remedy for acne, it is great at cleaning out pores and makes the texture of your skin wonderful. Cook the oatmeal using not milk, but water. Let it cool and then apply to your face. Leave it on for around 20 minutes and then wash off. Don’t scrub your skin. Pat your face dry. Do this about twice a week.

These two natural remedies can lead to a clear and blemish free skin, saving money on creams and other products offered on the market.

Wearing a Medical Alert System

When a family member has health concerns that affect his or her mobility, a medical alert can ensure loved ones that help can be reached quickly should the need arise.  A medical alert is an inconspicuous device that is worn on the body at all times. The device comes with a panic button that can be pressed should the wearer need emergency assistance. To ensure that they have around-the-clock access to assistance, wearers should test their devices frequently.

At Rescue Alert, we have a reputation for equipment that is extremely reliable. However, we encourage our clients to test their devices frequently for a few reasons. First and foremost, it is a good idea for customers to feel comfortable with calling for help using their device. After a few test runs, customers understand how the call works and what to expect from the representative who responds to the call. Secondly, every electronic device designed to protect individuals and families—whether a fire alarm, medical alarm, or other type of security system–should be tested to be sure that it is always in working order. Medical alerts are no exception.

To test the alarm on medical bracelets (or necklaces), simply press the panic button and wait for a call center representative to respond. When he or she responds, simply say that you are performing a monthly test on your device. If, for any reason, a response is not received, please notify us immediately so that we can test the device further and take any other steps to resolve the issue.

Periodontal Disease Cause, Symptoms, and Therapy

Periodontal disease is an infection of the area around a tooth. If left untreated, the condition can lead to tooth loss or worse. The disease is a chronic bacterial infection, and it affects the health of gums and supportive bone around the teeth. It is caused by plaque that inflames the gums and gets progressively worse until treated. Methods of treatment involve cleaning the area and, when necessary, removing damaged tissue. Sometimes cosmetic dentistry can restore the aesthetic appearance when tissue damage is extensive.

The mildest form of periodontal disease is gingivitis. Symptoms of gingivitis include red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Patients with this condition feel little to no discomfort in early stages. Gingivitis usually results from lax oral hygiene, but it is reversible with treatment and diligent attention to brushing and flossing teeth regularly. When gingivitis goes uncorrected, it can leave to periodontitis. This occurs when plaque spreads below the gumline causing gums to form pockets, and the pockets later become infected. As the disease worsens, the pockets deepen, and progressively more gum and bone tissue are destroyed. Eventually tooth loss occurs if the condition is not reversed. Local patients who have experienced tooth loss due to this or other reasons can rely on Toronto implant dentistry to restore teeth.

Dentists can stop periodontal disease and reverse its damaging effects to a large degree by cleaning teeth, removing damaged tissue, and replacing teeth when necessary. Rather than traditional methods, many cosmetic dentists are using lasers to remove damaged tissues, as this method causes less bleeding, swelling, and pain than traditional methods. After gums heal, dentists can use fillings or veneers to restore teeth and their aesthetic appearance. Finally, for patients who need tooth replacements, implants as well as bridges are the most common choice. For patients in the Tornoto area, Toronto dental implants are offered by expert dentists Dr. Andrew Charkiw and Dr. Armaghan Afsar at Toronto Smile Makeovers.

Half a Glass of Wine per Day Could Increase Cancer Risk

In the past, scientists have thought that the substance called resveratrol used in red wine could, in moderate amounts, provide heart health benefits. But a new study from the Cancer Institute in Paris shows that just half a glass of wine per day could also increase your risk of colon cancer by nine percent and the risk of mouth and throat cancer by as much as 168%. According to President Dominique Maraninchi, “Small daily doses of alcohol are the most harmful. There is no amount, however small, which is good for you.”

The findings are congruent with some earlier studies, noted by the Daily Telegraph, that have linked alcohol and smoking with increased risk of certain types of cancers. A comprehensive review by the World Cancer Research Fund concluded that alcohol use, in any amount, specifically increases the risk of mouth, voice box, throat, colon, liver, and breast cancers. Yet other studies, as reported by the Daily Record, have shown that the antioxidants in red wine actually reduce the risk of cancer, benefit the liver, and slow the rate of dementia by 85%.

As the debate over alcohol and cancer continues, staying updated on the latest oncological research is important. For further information about cancer, be sure to explore the website of the Dale & Frances Hughes Cancer Center in East Stroudsburg, PA. Prostate cancer treatment, breast cancer treatment, lung cancer treatment, and treatment for other types of cancer, as well as support services and resources are provided at the center.

Whiter Teeth in and around Toronto

In Toronto, patients who want whiter teeth have many options these days. The most effective and quickest way to whiten teeth is through an in-office procedure that involves gel applications and laser light that acts on the gel to remove stains. This procedure truly gives locals a Toronto smile makeover that results in teeth that are several shades lighter in a single office visit. Other treatments include take home kits provided by dentists or over-the-counter kits. Patients who decide to do the process independently should note the following facts:

  • The results of bleaching teeth are often not fully visible until approximately two weeks after bleaching. This is an important consideration, especially for patients who are considering fillings or restorations that will need to match the color of his or her lightened teeth.
  • Recessed gums, or those pushed back from time or gum disease, often reveal a tooth’s yellowish root surface along the gum line. That area of a tooth is often difficult to bleach.
  • Pregnant or nursing women should avoid teeth whitening. The potential impact of swallowed bleach on a fetus is not known and could pose a risk.

It is important to consider that in addition to basic advice and helpful experience, a professional can help a patient understand realistic outcomes, and plan the proper shade, rather than experiment by treating the teeth first! Expectations are very important when a patient has completed the procedure, and so is planning the shade in advanced. Local dentists who do Toronto teeth whitening have shade guides to help the dentist determine the most natural white for each patient. Whatever your choice, before embarking upon the task of whitening your teeth, be sure to do ample research to get optimal results. For detailed information on this procedure, contact a local Toronto dentist.

Privacy Concerns

When it comes to the movement for healthcare professionals to transition from paper records to electronic health records, one of the biggest concerns is ensuring the confidentiality that patients expect. It is estimated that as many as 150 people have access to a patient’s records during a hospital stay. This includes nurses, doctors, billing staff, and technicians. Up to 600,000 other entities have some access to the information, including providers and payers. If an open network such as the Internet is used for the transfer of an EHR across multiple points, there is always a risk for interception. By law, the healthcare individuals and organizations who handle this sensitive information are required to provide sufficient protection to safeguard the data. Additionally, they are required to ensure that only authorized parties have access to the information. As electronic information can be harder to protect than paper records, there are a wide range of new security challenges ahead for the industry.

Porcelain Veneer Care

Porcelain veneers can transform a regular smile into a glamorous one. While it’s true that porcelain handles wear better than natural tooth enamel, veneers require proper care to ensure that they last. First, it is possible to get cavities even with veneers, as they only cover part of the tooth, while the rest is covered by the porcelain veneers. Toronto offices and others all around North America can provide patients with veneers that can ideally last about 20 years—but this time span assumes proper care. How is caring for veneers similar to or different from caring for natural teeth? Keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Keeping gums healthy is important to maintain proper alignment. Puffiness, bleeding around the gums, or areas that begin to snag floss warrants a check-up.
  • Limit alcohol use when possible. The resin used to bond the veneer to the tooth can collect stains. In addition, some alcohol both intensifies stains and can soften the surface of the resin.
  • Avoid using toothpastes that are grainy or abrasive, as they can scratch the margins.
  • Remember that veneers can chip just like natural teeth. Never try to pry open a container of any kind or bite any type of hard object, such as a pin or lid, with your precious veneers.
  • As always, clean the teeth diligently, in particular after eating carbohydrates, as they can cause cavities in the uncovered side of any tooth sealed with a veneer.

Ask your dentist for additional tips on caring for your veneers. When your veneers still look brand new in a few years, you’ll be glad you did! Local dentists like Doctors Asfar and Charkiw know that local patients want a Toronto smile makeover that lasts decades, not just a few years.

Toronto Smiles

Like most cities, Toronto has seen a huge expansion in cosmetic dentistry. For dentists, Toronto is a busy city to work in! One office that provides time-tested quality services is Toronto Smile Makeovers. At this office, patients receive traditional and cosmetic dental care. The doctors there, Dr. Andrew Charkiw and Dr. Armagon Afsar, are well known for their expertise and for describing cosmetic dental procedures on the makeover television show Style by Jury. This office receives visits from high-profile clients, in addition to patients who make appointments on the recommendation of neighbors and friends around the city.

Whether patients want laser teeth whitening, porcelain veneersa>, or need to fix or replace a damaged tooth, Toronto has a number of offices to choose from. As with any other medical provider, no matter what office you choose, be sure to check references, compare prices, and have an idea of what you would like to have done now, as well as what procedures can wait until later. Technology, equipment, and new procedures are constantly available—Toronto is no exception, and the residents’ smiles show it!
