Improving your Reading Skills

Here are a few tips on how to improve your English language reading skills:

Read, read, read – the more you read, the better you will get at it. You can read anything and everything from a comic book to a magazine, to blogs, newspapers, websites and everything else you can get your hands on. You might come across lots of words you do not know or understand – this is where a dictionary comes in handy. If you are not a very good reader, start with something easy like kiddies’ books and even fairytales. Whatever you choose to read, ensure that it is something that interests you!

Interesting reads – there is no point at all in you reading material that bores you. Find reading material that interests you, captivates you and keeps you wanting more. If you like mystery and romance, then those are the books you should be looking for. If you like reading about the stock market and the business world, look for financial magazines and newspapers.

Keep practicing – practice makes perfect. In order to get better at reading, you have to keep doing it all the time – everyday preferably. Set aside a time for reading; this could vary from as little as fifteen minutes to even as much as an hour or more. Make sure to stick to this routine for at least three weeks. This way, if you really like reading, you can cultivate it as a hobby or even a good, healthy habit.

Famous books by famous authors – hunt down a list of best-selling books or award winning books, and start reading them one by one. These books are written extremely well and will help greatly towards improving not only your reading skills but also your comprehension of the language as well.
