Items for generator safety

If you are just looking to hook up one small appliance, using a power generator can be a fairly easy thing to use. However, if you are going to using a larger emergency generator to power large appliances or even your whole house, there are some additional steps that you need to consider in order to make the process run smoothly and safely.

One potentially dangerous situation is called “backfeeding.” This happens when power flows in the opposite direction that it normally does. When power is restored after an outage, this can sometimes occur, creating a dangerous situation for people working on the lines. An automatic transfer switch will instantly redirect power from the emergency generator to the main power, avoiding this potentially hazardous situation.

Another potential issue is with power surges or other issues that could create hazards to people and the appliances a generator is plugged into. An automatic voltage regulator can ensure that power surges don’t create a dangerous short in electrical wiring.
