Traveling Bed Bugs
As millions of Americans prepare to go on vacation this summer, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) reminds the nation to watch out for bed bugs. According to a recent warning issued by the NPMA, there has been a 71 percent increase in bed bug infestations since 2001, mainly because of international travel.
Although bed bugs do not spread diseases, these tiny bloodsucking parasites are notorious for hitchhiking their way home with people in their suitcases.
“Travelers can unknowingly bring bed bugs into their homes, giving the pests a new place to live and feed,” said Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. “We advise travelers to keep a few bed bug prevention tips in mind to avoid this most unwanted trip souvenir.”
To avoid bringing a bed bug to Fredericksburg, VA, the NPMA recommends inspecting the hotel bed sheets (including mattress seams and bed boards) for brownish or reddish dots. When unpacking your clothes, do not place your luggage on the bed. Instead, store luggage in a large plastic bag.
After your vacation, make sure to inspect and vacuum suitcases before storing them in the house. After unpacking, don’t forget to wash all clothes in hot water. If you return from your vacation and suspect a beg bug infestation, contact a licensed pest professional. To kill bed bugs in Woodbridge, Virginia contact Affordable Pest.
